Acid Reflux and GERD
When stomach acids back up into the esophagus, acid reflux can occur. Irritation of the lining of the esophagus can create heartburn. Chronic acid reflux may be diagnosed as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If left untreated, GERD can cause scarring, inflammation or narrowing of the esophagus.
Symptoms of GERD may include:
- Chronic heartburn
- Difficulty swallowing
- Back up of acid or food in the throat or mouth
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
Signs and symptoms of a heart attack can resemble heartburn. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you think you are experiencing these symptoms.
GERD treatment may include lifestyle modifications, medications or surgery.
